The Department of Home Affairs advises Australian citizens, including those with dual nationality, to leave and enter Australia on their Australian passport. You may experience issues returning to Australia on a foreign passport, for example, airlines may not allow you to board a plane to Australia without evidence of Australian citizenship or an Australian passport. Australian passport applications

Welcome to the Passport Office.

The Australian Passport Office (APO) is currently seeing strong demand for passports. For this reason, it is advising its customers to apply for or renew their passport well ahead of their planned travel dates. The APO is therefore recommending, at least for now, that they allow up to 10 weeks to get a new passport. Incomplete applications cannot be processed and will be delayed until they are complete.

If you are eligible for an adult or child renewal, you can lodge your application by mail.

All other applications must be submitted in person and by appointment only.

We accept only electronic payments.  We do not accept cash payment.

 

All passport applications lodged overseas will incur an additional fee. The overseas surcharge will not apply to emergency passport applications.

Urgent Travel

If you have an urgent need to travel you may apply for an Emergency Passport. Please write to  [email protected] or  [email protected] for full details.

 

PC8 - This form has to be used if:

  • you are applying for a child’s (under the age of 18) passport;
  • you are applying for your first adult passport (if your current passport was issued prior to 01/07/2005 and/or the holder had not reached the age of 16);
  • you are applying for a first ever Australian passport;
  • you are replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport;
  • you are applying to change your name or amend some personal details, such as, your date of birth;
  • you are applying for your first passport after resumption of citizenship;
  • you are applying to replace a limited validity passport, emergency passport, or other temporary travel document.
  • Children under the age of 16 do not have to attend the Embassy or Consulate in person. Children applications must be lodged by at least one parent or person with parental responsibility. Either one of the parents (whether they are an Australian citizen or not), can be the one who lodged the application.

    Children who are over the age of 16 must lodge the application in person, accompanied by at least one parent or person with parental responsibility.

 PC7  - This form may be used if your previous passport:

  1. Was issued when you were aged 16 or older;
  2. Was issued on or after 1 January 2006;
  3. When it was issued, at least two years’ validity
  4. Has your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender, and
  5. Has not been reported lost, stolen, or cancelled.

Applying by post

 

PC7 Adult renewals

 

Eligibility

For a renewal, you must be 18 years and over and you will need a passport that:

  • was issued when you were aged 16 or older;
  • was issued on or after 1 January 2006;
  • had, when it was issued, at least two years’ validity;
  • has your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender, and
  • has not been reported lost, stolen, or cancelled.

If you don’t meet these criteria, you’ll need to book an appointment to lodge your application in person.

You should post your application via tracked delivery.

Supporting documents

You must provide the following:

  1. photocopy of the biodata page of your most recent passport* (this does not need to be certified. Do NOT copy every page of your passport). The photocopy should be on A4 paper, please do not cut to size;
  2. completed renewal application form, dated within six months of lodgement, checking that:
    1. Section 5 of the form is signed and dated
    2. Your signature is kept inside the white box with no alterations or ‘whiteout’ on the signature or the date
    3. Your application form is valid, make sure your review the expiration date at the top of form
    4. Your form is printed correctly with no sections missing or cut-off
    5. Your place of birth is exactly the same as your previous passport;
  3. PAYMENT:                                                                                                                                                                                   If you are applying through the Australian Embassy in Rome: please send the completed payment authorisation form available HERE    ;                                                                                                                                                                         If you applying through the Australian Consulate-General in Milan: The fee payment will be done remotely by payment link to be sent once the application is received;
  4. Two Australian standard passport photos, less than six months old, with your full name written on the back of one photo

    2. Do not attach the photos to the form, leave them loose in the envelope.

PC8 renewals for children under the age of 16

 

Eligibility

Child passport renewal applications (PC8) can be mailed-in provided the applicant is: 

  • under the age of 16 (i.e. 15 or below);
  • has previously held an Australian passport.  

If you can answer yes to the above, complete a PC8 passport application online.  

For first-time child applications and applicants aged 16 or 17, the application must be lodged in person by appointment only.

 

Supporting documents

You must provide the following:

  1. photocopy of the biodata page of your most recent passport* (this does not need to be certified. Do NOT copy every page of your passport). The photocopy should be on A4 paper, please do not cut to size.
  2. completed PC8 application form, dated within six months of lodgement;
  3.     3. A guarantor must sign the application and endorse the back of one photo for all PC8 applications. The guarantor cannot be related to the applicant.

     5. Copies of Proof of Identification Documents for parents providing consent and both parents' proof of address. Photocopies  should be good quality, and black and white or colour photocopies are acceptable.

Name changes: If the current names of either parent are different to how they appear on the child’s birth certificate, please include certified copies of your IDs, your proof of address and documents explaining the change of name, such as a marriage certificate;

 6. Children 10 years or older must provide a signature unless there is a medical reason or disability that prevents them   from   signing.

      Parental Consent is required for a child passport.  Everyone who’s giving consent must sign section 15 of the form in front of  a     witness. Parents are not able to witness each other’s signatures. The witness must be an unrelated third party.

     7. Depending on your circumstances, we may require other documents. We will contact you upon receipt of your application to    advise if any further documents are required.

Please do not send us the previous passport or any other original documents. Send us only the completed form, two passport photos, copies of both parents' ID and both parents' proof of address and payment form.
